Context: In all mss the half-stanza is cited to illustrate a kenning for ‘winter’ (tregi orms ‘grief of the snake’).
Notes: [1] sigrgœðir ‘victory-increaser [WARRIOR]’: As a simplex, the first element in this cpd, sigr, means ‘victory’, but as the first element in compounds it could also mean ‘battle’ (see the examples given in LP: sigr- and Notes to Sigv Ást 1/4I and Gizsv Lv 1/5I). Finnur Jónsson (Skj B, followed by Kock in Skald) accordingly emend to siggœðir ‘battle-increaser’ (cf. sig n. ‘battle’). It is not clear whether sigrgœðir means ‘victory-increaser’ or ‘battle-increaser’ in the present context. — [2] í Þrándheimi ‘in Trøndelag’: The district Trøndelag and not the town of Trondheim (ON Kaupangr, Niðarós) is meant here (cf. Gade 1998). Trøndelag was Sverrir’s stronghold during his rather turbulent reign (see his Biography in SkP II, xci). — [4] trega orms ‘grief of the snake [WINTER]’: For kennings of this type, in which ‘winter’ is paraphrased as ‘harm, grief, terror, destroyer of snakes’, see Meissner 109.
