Hróksv Hrkv 24VIII (Hálf 74)
Hubert Seelow (ed.) 2017, ‘Hálfs saga ok Hálfsrekka 74 (Hrókr inn svarti, Hrókskviða 24)’ in Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.), Poetry in fornaldarsögur. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 8. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 361.
Segi ek svá kveðit snotru vífi,
at ek Brynhildar biðja mundak,
ef vita þættumz, at vildi hon
Hróki unna, Hámundar bur.
Ek segi svá kveðit snotru vífi, at ek mundak biðja Brynhildar, ef þættumz vita, at hon vildi unna Hróki, bur Hámundar.
Thus I make known to the wise woman that I would ask for the hand of Brynhildr, if I thought that she could love Hrókr, son of Hámundr.
Mss: 2845(38v) (Hálf)
Editions: Skj AII, 268, Skj BII, 291, Skald II, 153; Hálf 1864, 38, Hálf 1909, 129-30, FSGJ 2, 131, Hálf 1981, 196; Edd. Min. 48.
Notes: [All]: It
would appear from this and the following stanzas that Hrókr is very well aware
that he is being overheard (as the prose text represents it) and that he knows
who his audience is. — [1] ek segi svá kveðit ‘thus I make known’: Lit. ‘I say [it is] thus made known’.
