Ólafur konungur var mestur íþróttamaður í Noregi, þeirra er
menn hafa frá sagt, um alla hluti. Hverjum manni var hann
sterkari og fimari og eru þar margar frásagnir ritaðar um
það. Ein sú er hann gekk í Smalsarhorn og festi skjöld sinn í
ofanvert bjargið og enn það er hann hjálp hirðmanni sínum,
þeim er áður hafði klifið bjargið svo að hvorki mátti komast
upp né ofan, en konungur gekk til hans og bar hann undir
hendi sér ofan á jöfnu. Ólafur konungur gekk eftir árum
útbyrðis er menn hans reru á Orminum og hann lék að þremur
handsöxum svo að jafnan var eitt á lofti og henti æ
meðalkaflann. Hann vó jafnt báðum höndum og skaut tveim
spjótum senn.

Ólafur konungur var allra manna glaðastur og leikinn mjög,
blíður og lítillátur, ákafamaður mikill um alla hluti,
stórgjöfull, sundurgerðarmaður mikill, fyrir öllum mönnum um
fræknleik í orustum, allra manna grimmastur þá er hann var
reiður og kvaldi óvini sína mjög. Suma brenndi hann í eldi,
suma lét hann ólma hunda rífa í sundur, suma lemja eða kasta
fyrir hábjörg. Voru af þeim sökum vinir hans ástúðgir við
hann en óvinir hans hræddust við hann. Var því mikil
framkvæmd hans að sumir gerðu hans vilja með blíðu og vináttu
en sumir fyrir hræðslu sakir.
