Ólafur konungur var í Svíþjóð um vorið og hafði þaðan njósnir norður í Noreg og fékk þaðan þá eina spurn að ófriðsamlegt mundi þangað að fara og þeir menn er norðan komu löttu hann mjög að fara í landið. Hann hafði þá einráðið fyrir sér að fara slíkt sem áður.

Ólafur konungur spurði máls Önund konung hvern styrk hann mundi veita honum að sækja land sitt.

Önundur konungur svarar svo, segir að Svíum var lítið um að fara í Noreg herför. "Vitum vér," segir hann, "að Norðmenn eru harðir og orustumenn miklir og illir heim að sækja með ófriði. Skal það eigi seint að segja þér hvað eg vil til leggja. Eg mun fá þér fjögur hundruð manna og veljið af hirðsveitum mínum góða hermenn og vel búna til bardaga. Síðan vil eg gefa þér lof til að þú farir yfir land mitt og fáir þér lið allt það er þú mátt og þér vill fylgja."

Ólafur konungur tók þenna kost, bjóst síðan ferðar sinnar. Ástríður drottning var eftir í Svíþjóðu og Úlfhildur konungsdóttir.
