Ólafur konungur átti oft tal og stefnur við menn sína og spurði að ráðagerðum. En er hann fann að sitt lagði hver til þá grunaði hann að þeir voru sumir er annað mundu um mæla en sýnast mundi ráðlegast og mundi þá eigi ráðið hvort allir mundu honum rétta skuld gjalda um tryggðina.

Þess eggjuðu margir að þeir skyldu taka byr og sigla til Eyrarsunds og svo norður til Noregs. Sögðu þeir að Danir mundu ekki þora að þeim að leggja þótt þeir lægju fyrir með lið mikið.

En konungur var maður svo vitur að hann sá að slíkt var ófæra. Vissi hann og að annan veg hafði tekist Ólafi Tryggvasyni þá er hann var fáliður er hann lagði til orustu þar er her mikill var fyrir en Danir þyrðu þá eigi að berjast. Vissi konungur og að í her Knúts konungs var fjöldi Norðmanna. Grunaði konung að þeir er slíkt réðu honum mundu vera hollari Knúti konungi en honum.

Veitti Ólafur konungur þá úrskurð, segir svo að menn skulu búast, þeir er honum vilja fylgja, og fara landveg um hið efra Gautland og svo til Noregs. "En skip vor," segir hann, "og allan þunga þann er vér megum eigi eftir oss flytja vil eg senda austur í veldi Svíakonungs og láta þar varðveita oss til handa."
