En er Ólafur konungur átti tal við lið sitt þá leitaði hann ráða við höfðingja, hvert þeir skyldu upp taka. En það kom lítt ásamt með mönnum. Kallaði það annar óráð er öðrum þótti vænlegt og volkuðu þeir mjög lengi ráðin fyrir sér.

Njósnarmenn Knúts konungs voru jafnan í her þeirra og komu sér í tal við marga menn og höfðu þeir fram féboð og vináttumál af hendi Knúts konungs en þar létu margir eftir leiðast og seldu þar til trú sína að þeir skyldu gerast menn Knúts konungs og halda landi honum til handa ef hann kæmi í Noreg. Urðu margir að þessu berir síðar þótt það færi þá leynt fyrst. Sumir tóku þá þegar við fégjöfum en sumum var heitið fé síðar. En hinir voru allmargir er áður höfðu þegið af honum vingjafir stórar fyrir því að það var satt að segja frá Knúti konungi að hver er á hans fund kom, þeirra manna er honum þótti nokkuð mannsmót að og vildu hann þýðast, þá fékk hver af honum fullar hendur fjár. Varð hann af því stórlega vinsæll. Og var mest að um örleik hans við útlenda menn og þá mest er lengst voru að komnir.
