Sveinn jarl safnar liði allt um Þrándheim þegar eftir jólin og býður út leiðangri, býr og skipin.

Í þenna tíma var í Noregi fjöldi lendra manna. Voru þeir margir ríkir og svo ættstórir að þeir voru komnir af konunga ættum eða jarla og áttu skammt til að telja, voru og stórauðgir. Var þar allt traust konunganna eða jarlanna er fyrir landi réðu er lendir menn voru því að svo var í hverju fylki sem lendir menn réðu fyrir bóndaliðinu.

Vel var Sveinn jarl vingaður við lenda menn. Varð honum gott til liðs. Einar þambarskelfir mágur hans var með honum og margir aðrir lendir menn og margir þeir er áður um veturinn höfðu trúnaðareiða svarið Ólafi konungi, bæði lendir menn og bændur. Þeir fóru þegar úr firðinum er þeir voru búnir og héldu suður með landi og drógu að sér lið úr hverju fylki.

En er þeir komu suður fyrir Rogaland þá kom til móts við þá Erlingur Skjálgsson og hafði mikið lið og með honum margir lendir menn, héldu þá öllu liðinu austur til Víkur. Það var, er á leið langaföstu, er Sveinn jarl sótti inn í Víkina. Jarl hélt liðinu inn um Grenmar og lagðist við Nesjar.
