En er Haraldur kom til Sikileyjar þá herjaði hann þar og
lagði þar með liði sínu til einnar borgar mikillar og
fjölmennrar. Settist hann um borgina því að þar voru sterkir
veggir svo að honum þótti ósýnt að brjóta mundi mega.
Borgarmenn höfðu vist gnóga og önnur föng þau er þeir þurftu
til varnar.

Þá leitaði hann þess ráðs að fyglarar hans tóku smáfugla, þá
er hreiðruðust í borginni og flugu á skóg um daga að taka sér
mat. Haraldur lét binda á bak fuglunum lokarspónu af tyrvitré
og steypti vaxi og brennusteini og lét slá eldi í. Flugu
fuglarnir, þegar er lausir urðu, allir senn í borgina að
vitja unga sinna og híbýla er þeir áttu í húsþekjum þar er
þakt var reyr eða hálmi. Þá laust eldinum af fuglunum í
húsþekjurnar. En þótt einnhver bæri litla byrði elds þá varð
það skjótt mikill eldur er margir fuglar báru til víða um
borgina í þekjur og því næst brann hvert hús að öðru þar til
er borgin logaði. Þá gekk fólkið allt út úr borginni og bað
sér miskunnar, þeir hinir sömu er áður höfðu margan dag
drembilega mælt og háðulega til Grikkjahers og höfðingja
þeirra. Gaf Haraldur öllum mönnum grið, þeim er þess beiddu,
fékk síðan vald yfir þeirri borg.
