Kari Ellen Gade 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Stanzas from Laufás Edda’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 637. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=2976> (accessed 28 April 2024)
The ten half-stanzas and couplets edited below, Anon (LaufE) 1-10, are all anonymous stanzas transmitted only in one or more versions of LaufE (on that compilation, see Volume Introduction). The metre of most of these stanzas is dróttkvætt, but st. 2 is in hálfhnept, and sts 9-10 are in fornyrðislag and ljóðaháttr respectively. It is almost impossible to establish dates for this poetry on the basis of metrical and linguistic criteria, and it could well be that some stanzas are later compositions that grew out of new, learned prose environments (see the discussion in the Notes to the respective stanzas; see also Jón Helgason 1966a, 180). They have been normalised to the period 1200-50 (with reservations). Six of the stanzas (sts 1-5, 7) have previously been edited in Skj and Skald, and all stanzas are included in LaufE 1979. Stanzas 8-10 are edited in Jón Helgason (1966a).
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
