[5] lýsis ‘of oil’: In medieval Iceland, where tannin derived from tree-bark was not readily available, cleaned skins were tanned in fish-oil; further applications to the cured leather of fish-oil, and train-oil extracted from the blubber of seals or whales, provided effective waterproofing (cf. Jäfvert 1960).
