1. General
This is not currently part of the peer-reviewed material of the project. Do not cite as a research publication.
a. Translations will be in prose.
b. Fidelity to the original verse as interpreted in the edited text comes first, though a felicitous English text is desirable. Where an Icelandic idiom cannot be replicated exactly in English, square brackets can be used in order to give a more literal translation of the idiom. E.g. ‘was [lit. had become]’, but this should only be done sparingly, to avoid making the translation cluttered. Alternative translations may be given in the format ‘offered/gave’, but again this should be used sparingly.
c. It is not necessary to imitate the original hendingar, alliteration or rhythm, but if some rhyme or alliteration occurs ‘naturally’ and is compatible with exactness of translation, it is to be welcomed.
d. Nothing in the English translation should in itself require explanation.
e. As far as possible, the translation and prose word order should be in parallel.
