MUFI: The Medieval Unicode Font Initiative 2. MUFI character recommendation 1. MUFI character recommendations

1. MUFI character recommendations

This is not currently part of the peer-reviewed material of the project. Do not cite as a research publication.

The MUFI group has published a recommendation for the selection of characters from the Unicode Standard and for characters to be allocated to the Private Use Area (PUA). This recommendation coordinates the usage of the PUA with several other fonts and font projects, notably the TITUS project and Junicode.

Version 4.0

The fourth version of the recommendation has only 36 new characters, but it implements the full decommissioning of the more than 150 characters that have migrated to the official part of the Unicode Standard, and it clearly shows that all 39 code point conflicts with Junicode have been resolved. It was published on 22 December 2015:

▸ MUFI character recommendation v. 4.0: Alphabetical order ‑ PDF file, 2.1 MB
▸ MUFI character recommendation v. 4.0: Code chart order ‑ PDF file, 2.4 MB

The fourth version is also available with a permanent URI at the University Library in Bergen:

▸ http://hdl.handle.net/1956/10699

Version 3.0

The third version of the recommendation is a major update of 2.0, containing a number of new characters added in v. 5.1 of the Unicode Standard as well as many characters with superscript letters (primarily used in Medieval German sources). This version also contains all characters in the German font Mediaevum. It was published 5 July 2009:

▸ MUFI character recommendation v. 3.0: Alphabetical order ‑ PDF file, 1.1 MB
▸ MUFI character recommendation v. 3.0: Code chart order ‑ PDF file, 1.4 MB

Please note that there are two known misprints in v. 3.0: Alphabetical order:

P. 107, rows 2-3 from top:
ý → &ygrave;
Ý → &Yamp;grave;

Version 2.0

The second version of the recommendation is a major update with a total of 1326 characters. It was published 22 December 2006:

▸ MUFI character recommendation v. 2.0: Alphabetical order ‑ PDF file, 1.0 MB
▸ MUFI character recommendation v. 2.0: Code chart order ‑ PDF file, 1.1 MB

As of version 2.0 the recommendation has been divided into two parts, each containing the same number of characters, but in different order. Part 1 lists the characters in alphabetical order, beginning with alphabetical characters and then giving numbers, abbreviation characters, punctuation characters, and other signs. Part 2 lists the characters according to the code charts in the Unicode Standard.

Part 1 is intended for casual users since it is fairly easy to find any particular character simply by browsing through the document on screen or in print. Part 2 is intended for encoders and font designers since it lists characters according to Unicode code charts and thus in ascending code point order. It also shows the structure of the Private Use Area more clearly than Part 1. Finally, it contains more information than Part 1; it displays decommissions from version 1.0 to 2.0 on coloured background, it includes appendices specifying all changes from version 1.0 to 2.0, and it distinguishes between ISO entity names (where applicable) and MUFI recommended entity names.

Version 1.0

This is the first official version of the recommendation, published 8 December 2003 and containing a total of 828 characters. It is located at a persistent URL at the University Library in Bergen:

Please note that there are six known misprints in this version (of which two can be disruptive):

 • P. 29, row 3 from top: &aeligacute: → æacute;
 • P. 40, row 2 from bottom: &Tdot; 1E6C → &Tdot; 1E6A
 • P. 40, bottom row: ⃛ 1E6D → ⃛ 1E6B
 • P. 45, row 3 from bottom: HORIZONTAL DASH → HORIZONTAL BAR
 • P. 46, row 5 from top: &rsquolrev; → &rsquorev;
 • P. 57, l. 12 from top: 271D (p. 50) → 271D (p. 49)
