○. Early North Data Service (ENDS) 1. Data

1. Data

This is not currently part of the peer-reviewed material of the project. Do not cite as a research publication.

There are two basic categories of data:

  1. Objects which bear text, images or other semiotic information (‘mss’ table). These have sides (pages, physical sides, etc. — a virtual table); each side may have one or more images; they belong to collections which in turn belong to institutions. They have a location: where they are now found, and where they were originally found.
  2. Segments of semiotic information (‘verses’ table): useful chunks of text, subdivisions of longer texts, or the semiotic information associated with a picture, object, etc. These currently include, of poems: stanzas; of prose texts: books, chapters, headings, segments; of pictures: picture; of objects: object types; also cross-references; these belong to texts (actual or just groups of these segments), which in turn have an author (or anon.). Each segment may be divided into lines and words.
The two tables are linked by the ‘refs’ table, but are also linked to interpretative information and other things.
