1. Exporting to Word for book version (Vol 7 version)

To produce a version of the edition suitable for printing in book form:

1. Open the link for export: verse or poem in the verse view page. The export page should open in a new window in black and white. The formatting may not appear very tidy.
2. Save the exported HTML file to the Desktop.
3. Open the document template in Microsoft Word (it can be downloaded here); you must also have the font Adobe Garamond Pro Skaldic installed.
4. Open the file you have saved to the Desktop in Word, by dragging the file's icon onto the Word program icon. This is important - you may not be able to open the file in Word by other means.
5. Select the whole document, or the part of it you wish to import and copy it to the clipboard (see under Edit menu).
6. Click on the skaldic-edition.dot file and paste the selection into the new document. It should format the text automatically so that it appears with the correct characters in the Adobe Garamond Pro font.
7. To turn the template into a document on a Mac, save the file to the My Templates folder with an obvious name, then close; select File > Project Gallery from the menu; select My Templates and then the file you just saved, and open; save the document with a new name in an obvious place.
8. You may need to make some adjustments before printing, including:
   • Check formatting of discursive sections (biographies and introductions): First line should not be indented; Subsequent paragraphs should be indented without a space between paragraphs
   • Convert characters with separate diacritics to the relevant single character. This includes a/e/i/o/u/y with grave, circumflex, umlaut or tilde; c with cedilla. (These characters cannot be made conventionally in ReykholtTimes and must be written by using the letter without diacritic, followed by a separate accent. See also the skaldic-export.cgi file, which picks up the main ones). The easiest way to find these is to do a search on ´ ` ^ ~ and ¨, which will bring up any instances where these are not correctly represented.
   • Convert 4 spaces to 3 spaces (if you have a document with fornyrðislag or ljóðaháttr you may need to convert the 8-9 spaces to something else first - e.g. %%%%) [this issue is largely fixed in the new export format]
   • Convert non-breaking spaces to normal spaces (^s in Word) 
   • Paste poem title into right-hand header (or similar, depending on volume) - this only turns up if the document is long enough to have three pages (or two, if the first is an even number)
   • Insert the correct page number: go to View > Header and Footer and click on the 'format page number' button (the third or fourth button in the header/footer toolbar); insert the correct starting page number next to 'Start At'
   • Convert first heading to Header 1 style [this is fixed in the new export format - but check for consistency]
   • Check that the text of stanzas is kept together on a single page, not broken up over two pages; prose order should be kept with text of stanza even if this leaves a gap on the previous page; you will need to manually add lines to put stanza on new page - inserting a page break leaves a gap at the top of the page
   • Check that the lines in a stanza do not go over on to new lines - you may have to adjust character spacing in extreme cases (usu. hrynhent)
   • Check formatting of verses quoted in Notes. These should appear in a separate paragraph (using the Notes style) and be left-justified. Use the quotev style.
   • Check that Greek, Hebrew and any other non-standard scripts appear correctly; other possibilities include metrical notation and the yogh letter
   • Check that there is proper spacing between Editions and Notes, especially in the last stanza of a poem
