2. Manuals and Guidelines 1. Mini Manual 7. General conventions, abbreviations and bibliographical guidelines III. Special and abbreviated bibliographical references A. Abbreviated references to journals A. Abbreviated references to journals
This is not currently part of the peer-reviewed material of the project. Do not cite as a research publication.
The abbreviated reference may be to a journal name. For example,
SS in a bibliography entry refers to the journal
Scandinavian Studies, which can be found in the list of abbreviated journal names below. This list will be printed at the beginning of the published Bibliography. Please note that the abbreviated journal name is italicised. All other journal titles not on this list must be given in full.
Example: you wish to cite Russell Poole's 1982 article, 'Ormr Steinþórsson and the Snjófríðardrápa', which appeared in Arkiv för nordisk filologi 97, 122-37. An in-text reference might appear as (Poole 1982) or (Poole 1982, 124) or 'Poole 1982 has suggested ...'. The full reference in your bibliography would appear as Poole, Russell. 1982. 'Ormr Steinþórsson and the Snjófríðardrápa', ANF 97, 122-37, as this journal is one of the group to which abbreviated references have been assigned.
