vi. Ofljóst forms

This is not currently part of the peer-reviewed material of the project. Do not cite as a research publication.

Some kennings require the audience to understand a pun on the referent of a kenning, either in order to determine another referent for a kenning which it forms part of, or for the more general interpretation of the verse. In order to clarify such forms, the referent is followed by the Icelandic word which carries the pun, and then its alternative translation, in the format below. (Note that the following has a base-word kenning.)

a.       {{valfasti} djúps} — (GíslI Erf 16)

b.      {{the corpse-flame} [SWORD (brandr 'fire')] of the deep} [GOLD]

c.       the corpse-flame [SWORD (brandr 'fire')] of the deep [GOLD]
