8. Context

This is not currently part of the peer-reviewed material of the project. Do not cite as a research publication.

a.      A note of the prose context in which the verse is preserved is necessary for lausavísur and unidentified verses. For extended poems preserved in scattered fragments and/or in several different prose works it will also be necessary. Contexts in non-narrative works such as Snorra Edda and the grammatical treatises should be included, not narrative contexts alone.

b.      Where poems are preserved more or less complete and continuous, a note on context will be included in the general introduction to the poem, but will not be necessary in the presentation of individual verses.

c.       Notes on Context should be very brief - normally not more than 3 lines – but should highlight details of the prose which reflect particular understandings of the verse. # Information extraneous to the ON prose source may be added (e.g. dates of battles), but should be kept to a minimum.

d.      Where two or more verses from the same poem (but not the whole poem) are cited within the same prose context, a cross-reference to the Context for a previous verse will suffice.

e.       Where verses are preserved in several distinct prose works, separate entries will be necessary within the Context section. A suggested format for this is:

In Hkr, H-Hr, and Flat, the stanza / st. ...

         In SnE ...
