1. About Sigla

This key presents the sigla that indicate the source of each citation in the dictionary.
Alongside each siglum there is a reference to the corresponding edition with page and line references; letters and numbers in quotation marks and brackets are the ciphers used in the editions for the relevant manuscripts; ONP does not make use of an edition's internal line numbering if this is related to chapters or sections rather than pages. In the case of an unedited text there is the abbreviation ms. in the second column. The section or sections of the manuscript that correspond to each siglum are presented in the third column together with ONP's dating. If a manuscript designation is printed in italics this indicates that details concerning its dating are to be found in the list of medieval manuscripts.For later manuscripts or parts of manuscripts, the index usually quotes the datings of the relevant catalogues. Where only part of a work is printed in an edition, the full extent of the entire work within the manuscript is indicated in the third column within the delimiters » « for variant texts, only this indication of the extent of the whole work is given. The symbol □ indicates that the work in question occupies the entire manuscript (i. e. the manuscript contains no other text of significant length).
At the end of the list of the Old Norse texts of each work, foreign parallels are presented after the abbreviations da., eng., fr., lat., nty. Many of the foreign texts listed here have not yet been excerpted and the provisional nature of their identification as parallels to the Old Norse works must be emphasized. For a major work such as Maríu saga, much work on the tracing of foreign sources still remains to be done. Parallel passages in the Vulgate are not listed here.
Within the medieval manuscript material there are texts which have neither been edited nor specifically identified but which can nonetheless be grouped in terms of content under general categories such as jurisprudence, theology, homilies, exempla, encyclopaedic matter, minor notes, etc. Such texts or passages are not given specific mention in this register but they are incorporated in the material presented in the list of manuscripts, and until they are edited or specifically identified they will be cited by ONP under the general sigla Jur, Theol, Hóm, Æv, Enc, Not, etc. with the addition of a complete manuscript designation containing detailed reference to page and line.
