Þurkar þegn og styrkir
þeingill skýja leingi,
kveðr og kyssir síðan
kátr elsku munn vátan:
‘Feingin er líkn fyr laungu;

{The king of the clouds} [= God (= Christ)] dries [the eyes of] his follower and encourages him for a long time; joyful with love he greets him and then kisses the mouth wet [with tears]: ‘Mercy has long since been obtained; cease from weeping, my son! You shall yet follow in most of my footsteps all the way to martyrdom.’

Editions: Skj: [Anonyme digte og vers XIV], [B. 7]. En drape om apostlen Peder 47: AII, 507, BII, 556, Skald II, 305, NN §§1749, 1750; Kahle 1898, 88.

Notes: [4] munn vátan ‘the mouth wet [with tears]’: This interpretation (see NN §1749) is marginally less awkward than Finnur Jónsson’s (Skj B): Þurkar þegn ... vátan: törrer den (gråd)våde mand ‘he dries the man wet (from weeping)’. — [7] skalt enn ‘you shall yet’: Ms. ‘en’. The adv. seems more likely than conj. en in stressed position. Both Skj B and Skald print enn (cf. Skj B: endnu skal du). — [8] alt í pínu ‘all the way to martyrdom’: Finnur Jónsson’s emendation (Skj B) to ǫll, to agree with fótspor (l. 7) is unnecessary (cf. NN §1750).
