Mun ek þær gjafir         þiggja eigi,
nema frægr hafi         fjörsótt tekit.

Ek mun eigi þiggja þær gjafir, nema frægr hafi tekit fjörsótt.

I will not accept those gifts, unless you, famous one, have contracted a life-threatening illness.

Mss: 510(96r), Holm10 VI(3v), 568ˣ(103r), 27ˣ(139r), papp17ˣ(362v), 1006ˣ(598), 173ˣ(94r) (Frið)

Readings: [1] Mun ek þær gjafir: ‘[...]un ek þær gjafir’ 568ˣ, Þær mun ek ekki papp17ˣ, ‘mun eg [...] eige’ 1006ˣ, mun ek ekki þær 173ˣ    [2] þiggja eigi: þiggja ei Holm10 VI, þiggja gjafir papp17ˣ, þær gäfur þyggja 1006ˣ, ‘gafr þiggja’ 173ˣ    [3] nema frægr hafi: so Holm10 VI, 568ˣ, nema þú hafir frægr 510, nema þú frægr hafir 27ˣ, nema þú fylkir papp17ˣ, 1006ˣ, 173ˣ    [4] fjörsótt tekit: so Holm10 VI, 568ˣ, 27ˣ, fjörsótt with tekit added in right margin in scribal hand 510, fjörsóttar hafir papp17ˣ, fjörsótt hafir 1006ˣ, 173ˣ

Editions: Skj: Anonyme digte og vers [XIII], E. 7. Vers af Fornaldarsagaer: Af Friðþjófssaga ens frækna II 7 b: AII, 279, BII, 300, Skald II, 159; Falk 1890, 88, Frið 1893, 35-6, 59, 89, Frið 1901, 50, Frið 1914, 33; Edd. Min. 103.

Context: Following King Hringr’s extraordinarily generous offer in Frið 40, Friðþjófr responds with this qualified acceptance.

Notes: [All]: The stanza is in both A and B recension mss, with the exception of 109a IIˣ. The metre is fornyrðislag. — [3]: The reading of Holm10 VI has been preferred here to that of 510, which is unmetrical unless frægr is desyllabified to frægur. — [4] fjörsótt ‘a life-threatening illness’: A hap. leg. but the meaning of the cpd is perfectly clear. In the prose text following this stanza, the king indicates that he is indeed ill and he dies shortly afterwards.
