{Hræddari {hranna hyr}brjótr} rann frá ljótum styr.
‘The more fearful breaker of the fire of the waves [(lit. ‘fire-breaker of the waves’) GOLD > GENEROUS MAN] ran from the grim battle.’
Cited as an example of soloecismus involving comparison; the comparative form (samjafnanligt nafn) hræddari ‘more fearful’ is used instead of the positive form (settligu nafni) hræddr ‘fearful’.
This fragment expresses an idea opposite to that of Anon (TGT) 8 and the two are probably in deliberate contrast; cf. Anon (TGT) 8/1 hraustan ‘bravely’ and hræddari ‘more fearful’ (l. 1).
Text is based on reconstruction from the base text and variant apparatus and may contain alternative spellings and other normalisations not visible in the manuscript text. Transcriptions may not have been checked and should not be cited.
