Dverga heiti — Þul DvergaIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Dverga heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 692. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3227> (accessed 21 May 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Dverga), which contains names of dwarfs, is recorded in mss A (main ms.) and B (and
744ˣ) of
SnE. In ms. A the
þula has the chapter heading
Dverga heiti ‘Names of dwarfs’ written in red ink. In both mss the
þula is inserted into the initial section of the
þulur-sequence devoted to the names of various mythical and legendary beings. In ms. A it is preceded by
Þul Konunga and in ms. B by
Þul Sækonunga, and in both mss it is followed by Þul
Jǫtna I-
II. About half of the ninety-four dwarf-names listed in this
þula are also recorded in the so-called
Dvergatal, the dwarf stanzas in
Vsp 11-6, but not all the names mentioned there have been included in the present
þula (e.g.
Vestri,
Fundinn,
Náli,
Haugspori,
Fjalarr). That applies equally to the extant versions of
Dvergatal recorded in Codex Regius of the Poetic Edda, in Hauksbók (Hb) and in
SnE (
Gylf,
SnE 2005,
16-17); hence the relation of these lists to the
þula is not quite clear. Most of the names in
Þul Dverga, plus some additional ones, are recorded in alphabetical order in
LaufE (mss
papp10ˣ(39v),
2368ˣ(87) and
743ˣ(68v-69r), see
LaufE 1979, 263-4, 339-40). The variants of the names in these mss show that the ms. of the
þula used by Magnús Ólafsson is related to both A and B. Because the variants sometimes agree with the readings of A and sometimes with the readings of B, it appears that Magnús’s ms. may have been the common antecedent of A and B (see
LaufE 1979, 170-1). Variants from the
LaufE mss have therefore been included selectively in the present edition, but because the names are given in alphabetical order rather than in poetic form, the variants are discussed in the Notes and not included in the Readings. The
LaufE version of the
þula was copied in RE 1665(Ee2), which has not been considered here (see
Resen 1977, 29).

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
