This þula (Þul Sækonunga), which is recorded in mss R (main ms.), Tˣ, C, A, B (and 744ˣ) of Skm (SnE), contains names of sea-kings and comes first in all mss except B, where it is preceded by the þula Konunga heiti. It is followed by Jǫtna heiti I in R, Tˣ, C, by Konunga heiti in A and by Dverga heiti in B. In ms. A the poetic list is introduced by the clause Hér eru rituð heiti sækonunga ‘Here are written names of sea-kings’, while ms. B has the heading ‘s[…]eítí’ (‘Se᷎konunga heíti’ ‘Names of sea-kings’ 744ˣ). The heading is illegible in R and omitted in Tˣ and C. Along with the names of maritime chieftains traditionally employed as determinants in various types of kennings (above all in ship- and sea-kennings), the þula contains names of other famous legendary heroes and/or representatives of royal families, e.g. Hjálmarr (st. 3/5), Lyngvi (st. 4/4), Gautrekr (st. 5/3), Gjúki, Buðli (st. 5/4), some of which never appear in skaldic kennings. Some of the names are also included in RE 1665(Kk2) under the heading Sækonga heite Nockur ‘Some names of sea-kings’, but the order of names is somewhat different and many of the forms are corrupt. RE 1665 has not been considered in the present edition.
