Bjarnar heiti — Þul BjarnarIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Bjarnar heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 895. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3213> (accessed 6 May 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Bjarnar) contains
heiti for ‘bear’. It is recorded in mss R (main ms.),
Tˣ, C, A and B (and
744ˣ) of
SnE. In mss A and B the
þula has the chapter heading
Bjarnar heiti ‘Names for bear’ (in A, as usual, written in red ink); the heading is illegible in R and omitted in
Tˣ, C. In R,
Tˣ, C
Þul Bjarnar is not separated from the following
Þul Hjartar, which is not recognised as a distinct list of
heiti in this group of mss. In all the mss
Þul Bjarnar is preceded by
Þul Hafrs. Ten of the
heiti from this
þula were copied in
LaufE from a ms. related to the R,
Tˣ, C redaction, with some additional
heiti added at the end in
LaufE Y (
LaufE 1979, 263, 339; mss
papp10ˣ(39v),
2368ˣ(86-87),
743ˣ(68v)). The list in
LaufE was copied in RE 1665(Dd 3) from a ms. of the
LaufE Y redaction with more
heiti added at the end. The caption is
Biørn heiter. En Biørn heeder. Ursi Nomina sunt ‘Bear is called. A bear is called. These are the Names of a Bear’. After the entry on the
heiti for ‘hart’ (
Hiartar heite. Hiorter kaldis. Cervi appellantur), which was taken from a ms. belonging to the A, B redaction (see
Þul Hjartar, Introduction), the
þula was copied in its entirety (with two additional
heiti) in RE 1665(Gg 2) with the heading
Huyita Biørn.
Biørn kaldis. Ursus vocatur ‘Polar bear. Bear is called. Bear is called’ (see also
Resen 1977, 42). The variants do not allow for a definite attribution to the R,
Tˣ, C redaction or to the A, B redaction. Neither
LaufE nor RE 1665 has been considered in the present edition.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
