Anon Lil 45VII/7 — öll ‘All’

Friett hefir eg, að freistar drottins
föstumóðs á ýmsum löstum
púkans slægð, er hvern mann hugðiz
hrekkjum vanr, í synd að blekkja.
Vielakrings á vöfðum streingjum
vundin oft, en sneruz á lofti,
skeytin öll hin flærðarfullu
fjandans brjóst í gegnum standa.

Eg hefir friett, að slægð púkans freistar drottins, föstumóðs, á ýmsum löstum, er, vanr hrekkjum, hugðiz að blekkja hvern mann í synd. Öll hin flærðarfullu skeytin vielakrings fjandans, oft vundin á vöfðum streingjum, standa í gegnum brjóst en sneruz á lofti.

I have heard that the sleight of the devil tempts the Lord, weary from fasting, in various faults, he who, accustomed to tricks, thinks to entice every man to sin. All the treacherous darts of the enemy, deft at deceit, often fired with twisted bow-strings pierce his own breast and turn in the air.

notes

[7] öll hin flærðarfullu skeytin ‘all the treacherous darts’: In this reading the noun skeyti is made definite by both the free-standing definite article hin and the suffix –in. See Haugen’s discussion (2001, 268, §17.3.1) of dobbel bestemming ‘double definiteness’. This reading, peculiar to Bb, is followed in the eds of Wisén (1886-9, I), Eiríkur Magnússon (1870), and Guðbrandur Jónsson (1933, 1951, 1992). Skj B and Skald follow the majority mss’ ens flærðarfulla which qualifies fjanda in l. 8, ens flærðarfulla fjanda ‘of the treacherous devil’.
