ESk Geisl 27VII/4 — Magnúss ‘of Magnús’

Fǫður skulum fultings biðja
(fremðarþjóð) ins góða
(mœðir mart á láði)
Magnúss hvatir bragnar.
Greitt má gumnum létta
guðs ríðari stríðum;
rǫskr þiggr allt, sem œskir,
Óláfr af gram sólar.

Hvatir bragnar skulum biðja fultings fǫður Magnúss ins góða; mart mœðir fremðarþjóð á láði. Guðs ríðari má greitt létta stríðum gumnum; rǫskr Óláfr þiggr allt, sem œskir, af gram sólar.

We brave men should pray for help to the father of Magnús the Good [= Óláfr]; much afflicts the valiant people in the land. God’s knight [SAINT = Óláfr] can easily alleviate afflictions for men; brave Óláfr gets all he desires from the king of the sun [= God].

notes

[1, 2, 4] fǫður Magnúss ins góða ‘the father of Magnús the Good’: The epithet for Óláfr anticipates the miracle described in sts 28-30.
