Nú biðk Krist,
at konungs spjalli
hafi þat allt,
es œskir sér,
giptudrjúgr
af guði sjǫlfum,
allan aldr
ok unaðs njóti.
Nú biðk Krist, at spjalli konungs hafi allt þat, es œskir sér, giptudrjúgr, af guði sjǫlfum, ok njóti unaðs allan aldr.
Now I ask Christ that the confidant of the king should have all that which he wishes for himself, the one of lasting good luck, from God himself, and that he should enjoy bliss all his life.
[2] spjalli konungs ‘the confidant of the king’: Jón Loptsson was in Norway in 1163, and, according to MErlHkr (ÍF 28, 395), King Magnús Erlingsson acknowledged their kinship. Jón returned to Iceland the following year, but he may have been present at Magnús’s coronation in 1164 (see Hungrv 1953, 28).
