Anon Mgr 5VII/5 — skuli ‘should’

‘Veitum lof,’ kvað göfugur gætir
góðra klerka, ‘dróttins móður;
lærðir menn og lýða ferðir,
laugum brár og kinnr í tárum.
Mætust, bið eg, að mier skuli veita
móðir dróttins alt ið góða
jungfrú glödd, er Jésús fæddi,
enn að lýsa heiminn þenna.’

‘Veitum lof móður dróttins,’ kvað göfugur gætir góðra klerka; ‘lærðir menn og ferðir lýða, laugum brár og kinnr í tárum. Eg bið, að mætust móðir dróttins, glödd jungfrú, er fæddi Jésús, skuli veita mier alt ið góða, enn að lýsa þenna heiminn.’

‘Let us give praise to the mother of the Lord [= Mary],’ said the glorious guardian of good clerics [BISHOP = Augustine]; ‘learned men and crowds of people, let us wash eyelashes and cheeks in tears. I ask that the most magnificent mother of the Lord [= Mary], the joyous Virgin who gave birth to Jesus, should grant me everything good, yet again to illuminate this world.’
