Anon Mgr 44VII/8 — mátta ‘could’

‘Finn eg minn þann fögnuð annan;
fæddi eg Krist, er heiminn græddi,
jólanótt að eins guðs vilja
öllum lýð til sálu prýði.
Síðan reikna eg þann inn þriðja,
þeyja borgar páskamorginn
ríkr og fróðr er reis af dauða
ræsir ítr, sem mátta eg líta.

‘Finn eg þann annan fögnuð minn: eg fæddi Krist, er heiminn græddi, jólanótt að vilja eins guðs til prýði sálu öllum lýð. Síðan reikna eg þann inn þriðja, er ítr ræsir borgar þeyja, ríkr og fróðr, reis af dauða páskamorginn, sem eg mátta líta.

‘I find that to be my second joy: I gave birth to Christ, who delivered the world, on Christmas night by the will of the one God for the glory of the soul of all people. Then I count that as the third, when the splendid ruler of the stronghold of warm winds [SKY/HEAVEN > = God (= Christ)], powerful and wise, rose from death on Easter morning, as I could see.
