Anon Mdr 19VII/3 — rósa* ‘rose’

Fagnaðu, fullrar tignar
fagrt blóm, í manndómi
upprísandi, rósa*
rjóð, listugum Kristi.
Fagnaðu, Jésú* eignaz
ástarlimir til himna
stíg þinn, gæzku gnóga,
góðir, dýrðar móðir.

Fagnaðu, fagrt blóm fullrar tignar, rjóð rósa*, listugum Kristi upprísandi í manndómi. Fagnaðu, móðir dýrðar, gnóga gæzku; góðir ástarlimir Jésú* eignaz stíg þinn til himna.

Rejoice, beautiful flower of complete honour [= Mary], red rose, at vigorous Christ rising up in human form. Rejoice, mother of glory [= Mary] in goodness abundantly; Jesus’ good limbs of love will secure your path to the heavens.

notes

[3-4] rjóð rósa* ‘red rose’: On the general use of rose imagery in Mariolatry, see Warner 2000, 306-8 and passim. On Mary as a flower, and specifically a rose (symbolising love), see Schottmann 1973, 22-32 and especially 26, where kennings for the Virgin employing a flower word as base and an abstract noun as determinant, as in fagrt blóm fullrar tignar ‘beautiful flower of complete honour’ (ll. 1-2), are analysed.
