Innsteinn Innkv 2VIII (Hálf 16)/6 — réðim ‘were up’

Sér ekki þú allan         Ásmundar hug;
hefir fylkir sá         flærð í brjósti.
Mundir þú, þengill,         ef vér því réðim,
mági þínum         mjök litt trúa.

Þú sér ekki allan hug Ásmundar; sá fylkir hefir flærð í brjósti. Þú, þengill, mundir trúa mági þínum mjök litt, ef vér réðim því.

You do not see Ásmundr’s whole mind; this prince has falsehood in his breast. You, king, should trust your kinsman very little, if it were up to us [me].

notes

[6] ef vér réðim því ‘if it were up to us [me]’: Lit. ‘if we decided about that’. With earlier eds, the ms.’s réðum has been normalised to réðim (pret. subj.), which would have been normal in a text of the C13th in a concessive clause (cf. ANG §536.2), but in a C15th ms. reflects the later Icelandic use of the indic. ending in such circumstances. Similar are Hálf 60/4, 6.
