Hringrk Lv 1VIII (Frið 39)/8 — um

Far þú eigi svá,         Friðþjófr, heðan,
dýrstr döglinga,         í döprum hug.
Mun ek þér gjafir         þínar launa
víst betr, en þik         um varir sjálfan.

Far þú eigi svá heðan, Friðþjófr, dýrstr döglinga, í döprum hug. Ek mun víst launa þér gjafir þínar betr, en þik sjálfan um varir.

Do not go from here in this way, Friðþjófr, most splendid of princes, in a downcast mood. I will reward you for your gifts certainly better than you yourself expect.

readings

[8] um: om. papp17ˣ, 1006ˣ, 173ˣ

notes

[7-8] betr, en þik sjálfan um varir ‘better than you yourself expect’: The main ms. (510) here has the more archaic reading of varir, which has been normalised to um varir (see Note to Ásm 1/3, 5). The verb vara ‘expect’ is used impersonally, with acc. of the person who expects something and gen. of what is expected.
