Anon (SnE) 6III/1 — fjandr ‘The enemies’

Hnigu fjandr at glym Gǫndlar
grams und arnar hramma.

Fjandr grams hnigu und hramma arnar at glym Gǫndlar.

The enemies of the ruler sank down beneath the claws of the eagle at the din of Gǫndul <valkyrie> [BATTLE].

notes

[1] fjandr ‘the enemies’: The metre shows that this word (earlier disyllabic fíandr) is monosyllabic here (no resolution is possible in this metrical position), which means that the couplet cannot be earlier than c. 1200 (see ANG §133a and Introduction to Anon (SnE) 5-6 above).
