Anon Bjark 7III/2 — inn ‘the’

Svá skalk hann kyrkja         sem inn kámleita
véli viðbjarnar         veggja aldinna.

Svá skalk kyrkja hann sem inn kámleita véli viðbjarnar aldinna veggja.

Thus I shall throttle him like the dark betrayer of the wood-bear of old walls [MOUSE > CAT].

notes

[2-4] inn kámleita véli viðbjarnar aldinna veggja ‘the dark betrayer of the wood-bear of old walls [MOUSE > CAT]’: The interpretation of this unique kenning (cf. Meissner 111) is secured by the prose commentary in LaufE.

grammar

Pronouns and determiners: Definite article

The definite article is normally suffixed to nouns, except in some cases where it is used with an adjective. If the noun form ends in a vowel, the 'i' in the article is dropped. If the noun form ends in 'um', the 'm' and 'i' are both dropped. E.g. hesta (acc. pl.) > hestana (acc. pl. definite); hestum (dat. pl.) > hestunum (dat. pl. definite)
