notes

[4] sómr (m.) ‘seemly one’: Cf. the weak verbs sœma ‘honour’ and sóma ‘beseem’, as well as the noun sómi m. ‘honour’ and the heiti sómi among the terms for ‘sword’ in Þul Sverða 1/8; see also Note to Eskál Vell 34/2I. Sómr is also the name of a giant (see Þul Jǫtna I 3/7), but that heiti is not otherwise used in poetry.
