The one with a good memory who shared out gold acquired much wisdom from old men. The ruler of Opplandene [NORWEGIAN KING = Haraldr] was beloved of all the people for his munificence.
[1] minnigr ‘the one with a good memory’: This is understood as a substantival adj., and the reference may be to the virtuous circle in which the ruler is mindful of his duty of generosity, remembering and rewarding loyal service, and in turn receives good advice. Finnur Jónsson (Skj A) suggests instead that the word may be an error for mildingr ‘generous ruler’.
