And there the lord of men [KING = Hákon], fierce towards gold, sat on the gift-chair. Each man received from the ring-generous one that which mankind could wish for.
[4] gjafstóli ‘the gift-chair’: The cpd is not treated as a kenning in Meissner, and LP: gjafstóll compares sitja á gjafstóli ‘sit on the gift-chair’ (be generous) to sitja á friðstóli ‘sit on the peace-chair’ (be peaceful). See also OE gifstōl ‘gift-seat, throne’ (Beowulf l. 168a).
