Steinn Nizv 3II/7 — útan ‘off’

Vann fyr móðu mynni
meinfœrt Haraldr Sveini;
varð, þvít vísi gerðit,
viðrnám, friðar biðja.
Herðu hjǫrvi gyrðir
Halland jǫfurs spjallar
(heit blés und) fyr útan
atróðr á sæ (blóði).

Haraldr vann Sveini meinfœrt fyr mynni móðu; viðrnám varð, þvít vísi gerðit biðja friðar. Spjallar jǫfurs, gyrðir hjǫrvi, herðu atróðr á sæ fyr útan Halland; heit und blés blóði.

Haraldr made access difficult for Sveinn before the river’s mouth; there was resistance, because the ruler [= Sveinn] did not beg for peace. The prince’s confidants, girded with a sword, intensified the rowing on the sea off Halland; the hot wound spurted blood.

notes

[6] fyr útan Halland ‘off Halland’: Echoes Steinn Óldr 9/5-6. Halland is a district on the south-western coast of present-day Sweden (then a part of Denmark). The river Nissan is located in Halland.
