* Dóttir dǫglings hét Þóra; sú vas gipt gǫfgum manni. Systir jǫfra, sús fœddi Jóan, vas allra helzt sonsæl.

The daughter of the monarch was called Þóra; she was married to a noble man. The sister of princes who gave birth to Jón was above all son-blessed.

Mss: Flat(144vb)

Readings: [1] Hét *: hét ein Flat

Editions: Skj AI, 588, Skj BI, 588, Skald I, 287; Flat 1860-8, II, 527.

Notes: [All]: At this point, the poet has ‘come down close to the whale’, so to speak (see Note to st. 2/1-4), and the remainder of the poem focuses on the family of the Oddaverjar. He also reverts to the style of st. 1, with concatenations of non-verbal elements obliterating the helmingr boundaries (e.g. allra helzt ‘above all’ (l. 5); cf. sts 1/5 and 68/7). — [1] *: Ein (f. nom. sg) ‘one’ (so Flat) makes the l. unmetrical, and the numeral has been omitted in accordance with most earlier eds. — [6] Jóan ‘Jón’: For the disyllabic, early form of this name, see ANG §359.2.
