Nú es heldr,
svát halla tekr,
ævilok
jǫfra at telja:
hét Magnús
mǫgr Sigurðar
heiptargjarn
en Haraldr bróðir.

Nú es heldr at telja ævilok jǫfra, svát tekr halla: {heiptargjarn mǫgr Sigurðar} hét Magnús en bróðir Haraldr.

Now I shall indeed recount the deaths of princes, so that it begins to draw to a close: {the vengeance-eager son of Sigurðr} [= Magnús] was called Magnús and the brother Haraldr.

Mss: Flat(144vb)

Editions: Skj AI, 586, Skj BI, 585, Skald I, 285, NN §2121; Flat 1860-8, II, 526.

Notes: [1] heldr ‘indeed’: Skj B construes this adv. with the second cl., but such a syntactic division of the trisyllabic odd l. does not occur elsewhere in kviðuháttr (see NN §2121). — [3] ævilok ‘deaths’: See Note to st. 18/3. — [7] heiptargjarn ‘the vengeance-eager’: See Note to st. 11/3. Magnús could indeed be characterised as ‘vengeance-eager’ because he had been mutilated by Haraldr gilli (see the next st.).
