Kómum at eyju         útan brattri
sumar síðla;         þá var segl rifat.
Gerðu fyrðar         flestir allir
skipum til hlunns         skjótt at ráða.

Kómum síðla sumar útan at brattri eyju; þá var segl rifat. Flestir allir fyrðar gerðu skjótt at ráða skipum til hlunns.

We arrived late in the summer at the steep island; then the sail was reefed. Almost all the men quickly set about pulling up the ships onto rollers.

Mss: 343a(80v), 471(94v), 173ˣ(61vb) (Ǫrv)

Readings: [3] sumar: sumars 173ˣ    [4] rifat: rifit 173ˣ

Editions: Skj AII, 309, Skj BII, 327, Skald II, 175; Ǫrv 1888, 200, FSGJ 2, 345.

Notes: [1-2]: These lines are exactly the same as Ǫrv 76/5-6, where the island concerned is Grímr loðinkinni’s home of Hrafnista. No name is given in the prose text to the island where Oddr and his companions make land after their adventures among the Saami and Permians, although in 7 Oddr is reported as saying (Ǫrv 1888, 39) that it must be in Giantland (Risaland).
