Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.) 2017, ‘Ǫrvar-Odds saga 33 (Ǫgmundr Eyþjófsbani, Lausavísur 3)’ in Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.), Poetry in fornaldarsögur. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 8. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 846.
Þeir elta mik allsýsliga
Oddr ok Sírnir orrostu frá.
Þeir elta mik allsýsliga, Oddr ok Sírnir, frá orrostu.
They are pursuing me very quickly, Oddr and Sírnir, from the fight.
Mss: 343a(74v), 471(85r) (Ǫrv)
Readings: [2] allsýsliga: alltómliga 471 [4] frá: so 471, í frá 343a
Editions: Skj AII, 297, Skj BII, 317, Skald II, 169; Ǫrv 1888, 136, FSGJ 2, 295.
Notes: [All]: This helmingr is treated as a separate stanza in Skj and Skald, though it runs on without a break in both mss. It is not found in 173ˣ. — [2] allsýsliga ‘very quickly’: Ms. 471’s reading alltómliga ‘very slowly, at a very leisurely pace’ seems to be the opposite of what is required. — [3]: Sírnir is the name of one of Ǫrvar-Oddr’s companions who helps him overcome Ǫgmundr; according to Ǫrv, he comes from Gautland (Ǫrv 1888, 125-6). — [4] frá orrostu ‘from the fight’: Ms. 471’s reading is metrical, but 343a’s is not, the scribe perhaps not understanding the postposition of the prep. frá.
