Keth Lv 17VIII (Ket 29)
Beatrice La Farge (ed.) 2017, ‘Ketils saga hœngs 29 (Ketill hœngr, Lausavísur 17)’ in Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.), Poetry in fornaldarsögur. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 8. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 581.
Ketill ek heiti kominn ór Hrafnistu;
þar var ek upp um alinn.
Hugfullt hjarta veit ek hlífa mér;
þó vilda ek gisting geta.
Ek heiti Ketill kominn ór Hrafnistu; þar var ek upp um alinn. Ek veit hugfullt hjarta hlífa mér; þó vilda ek geta gisting.
I am named Ketill, come from Hrafnista; there I was brought up. I know that a courage-filled heart protects me; yet I would like to obtain lodging.
Mss: 343a(57v), 471(55r) (Ket)
Readings: [6] gisting: gisting corrected from ‘gistning’ 471
Editions: Skj AII, 285, Skj BII, 306, Skald II, 162; FSN 2, 134, FSGJ 2, 175-6, Anderson 1990, 57, 104; Edd. Min. 82.
Context: This stanza follows straight on from Ket 28 and is introduced by the words: Ketill kvað vísu ‘Ketill spoke a stanza’.
Notes: [1-2]: Ketill identifies himself with a sentence which is almost identical to his self-identification in Ket 5/1-2, the only difference being that there he gives his name as Hœngr rather than Ketill. In several mss Ketill’s answer consists of a single unmetrical sentence: Ketill ór Hrafnistu | máttu mik kalla ‘you can call me Ketill from Hrafnista’ which perhaps could be regarded as a single long-line.
