Notes: [1] barg; Leiknar ‘provided for; of Leikn <giantess>’: Bar ‘carried’ and ‘licnar’ must be Rugman’s misreadings of barg and Leiknar, although it is possible that ‘bar’ could reflect an actual (dialectal) loss of final ‑g (see Hl 1941, 113). For Leikn, see Vetrl Lv 1/1 and Note to Þul Trollkvenna 4/7. — [2] ljóthrǫmmuðustum ‘the very ugly-pawed’: Hap. leg.; a sup. adj. derived from hrammr ‘paw’. The mss have ‘liotrannadastom’, which most earlier eds emend to ljótrǫnuðustum ‘the very ugly-snouted’, from the adj. ljótr ‘ugly’ and rani m. ‘snout’; SnE 1848, 245 retains the ms. reading but does not explain what this word means. The metre requires a long syllable in position 2 (cf. papp25ˣ, R683‘: ‘-rann-’), however, and <mm> (or <m̄>) could have been misread as <nn> (initial h- in the cluster hr- is consistently omitted in Rugman’s transcriptions). For Norwegian lack of u-umlaut in the ms. transcriptions of this word (‘-rannadastom’), as well as in ‘-sceptadadstom’ and ‘-oddadastom’ (ll. 6, 8), see Note to st. 63/8. — [2] Sóta ‘Sóti <horse>’: The mss read ‘sotta’ (sótta ‘attacked’), reflecting the spelling <tt> for <t> (see Note to st. 38/5). Sóti is the name of a horse (see Anon Þorgþ I 1/6). — [4] bjúgnefjaðastan ‘the very crooked-beaked’: Hap. leg.; a sup. adj. derived from the noun nef ‘nose, beak’. — [6] beinskeptuðustum ‘the very straight-shafted’: Hap. leg.; p. p. of the verb skepta ‘supply with a shaft’. — [8] hvassodduðustum ‘the very sharp-pointed’: Hap. leg.; a sup. adj. derived from the noun oddr ‘point’.
