Stunðu seggir; stôl roðnuðu;
skaut bjartr konungr bôðum hǫndum.
Hǫrð spjót bitu; benjar svíddu;
herskip hruðusk hvárratveggju.
Seggir stunðu; stôl roðnuðu; bjartr konungr skaut bôðum hǫndum. Hǫrð spjót bitu; benjar svíddu; herskip hruðusk hvárratveggju.
Men moaned; weapons were reddened; the bright king shot with both hands. Hard spears bit; wounds smarted; warships were cleared on both sides.
Mss: Mork(34v) (Mork)
Readings: [7] hruðusk: ruðusk Mork
Editions: Skj AI, 501, Skj BI, 474, Skald I, 233; Mork 1867, 218, Mork 1928-32, 432, Andersson and Gade 2000, 383, 493 (Sslemb).
Context: As st. 37 above.
Notes: [3, 4] skaut bôðum hǫndum ‘shot with both hands’: See Gísl Magnkv 13/1-2. — [7] hruðusk ‘were cleared’: Ruðusk ‘were reddened’ (so Mork) has been emended to hruðusk ‘were cleared’ with earlier eds. Although ‘reddened’ (with blood) could make sense, the prose texts of both Mork (Mork 1928-32, 432) and Hkr (ÍF 28, 316) state explicitly that the ships were cleared at this point.
