Kari Ellen Gade (ed.) 2009, ‘Ívarr Ingimundarson, Sigurðarbálkr 15’ in Kari Ellen Gade (ed.), Poetry from the Kings’ Sagas 2: From c. 1035 to c. 1300. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 2. Turnhout: Brepols, pp. 510-11.
Drifu til reipa í rotuveðri
reyndir at risnu ræsis þegnar.
Urðu seggir segls at gæta,
— þá vas svalt á sæ — en sumir jósu.
Þegnar ræsis, reyndir at risnu, drifu til reipa í rotuveðri. Seggir urðu at gæta segls, en sumir jósu; þá vas svalt á sæ.
The ruler’s retainers, tested in magnanimity, rushed to the ropes in the roaring rainstorm. Men had to tend the sail and some bailed; then it was cold at sea.
Mss: Mork(33v) (Mork); F(71rb)
Readings: [2] rotu‑: ‘roþo’ Mork, ‘rꜹðo’ F
Editions: Skj AI, 497, Skj BI, 470, Skald I, 230; Mork 1867, 211, Mork 1928-32, 420, Andersson and Gade 2000, 376, 491-2 (Sslemb); F 1871, 328 (MbHg).
Context: Stanzas 15-17 describe Sigurðr’s sailing from Norway to Sweden
in 1137.
Notes: [All]: The prose of Mork (and F) is clearly derived from the poetry here. Hkr (ÍF 28, 309), which does not cite any sts, has Sigurðr travelling from Norway to Denmark. — [2] í rotuveðri ‘in the roaring rainstorm’: The ms. readings (‘roþo’ Mork, ‘rꜹðo’ F) cannot be construed to make any sense.
