Væri mart         mǫnnum kynna
ór folkstafs         fornu kvæði.
Ek mun þó         þeygi fleira
Þróttar þings         þollum segja.

Mart væri kynna mǫnnum ór fornu kvæði {folkstafs}. Ek mun þó þeygi segja {þollum {þings Þróttar}} fleira.

There would be many things to inform men [about] from the old poem {of the people-stave} [LEADER = Merlin]. I will however not say more {to the fir-trees {of the assembly of Þróttr <= Óðinn>}} [BATTLE > WARRIORS].

Mss: Hb(50v) (Bret)

Editions: Skj AII, 20-1, Skj BII, 22-3, Skald II, 14; Bret 1848-9, II, 37 (Bret st. 62); Hb 1892-6, 276; Merl 2012, 122.

Notes: [All]: The consistent use of the kviðuháttr verse-form begins with this stanza and continues to the end of the poem. — [6] þeygi ‘not’: Emended in Skald to eigi, presumably to improve the alliteration, but unnecessarily, since in kviðuháttr þó (l. 3) can bear alliteration.
