Bkrepp Magndr 4II
Kari Ellen Gade (ed.) 2009, ‘Bjǫrn krepphendi, Magnússdrápa 4’ in Kari Ellen Gade (ed.), Poetry from the Kings’ Sagas 2: From c. 1035 to c. 1300. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 2. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 399.
Víkinga lætr vengis
vallbaugs hati falla;
vítt rýðr jǫrn á ýtum
Óláfs mǫgr in fǫgru.
{Hati {vengis {vallbaugs}}} lætr víkinga falla; vítt rýðr {mǫgr Óláfs} in fǫgru jǫrn á ýtum.
{The hater {of the meadow {of the field-ring}}} [SNAKE > GOLD > GENEROUS MAN] makes the vikings fall; far and wide {Óláfr’s son} [= Magnús] reddens the fair weapons on men.
Mss: Mork(23r) (Mork); F(58rb)
Readings: [1] lætr: lét F
Editions: Skj AI, 435, Skj BI, 405, Skald I, 200, NN §2046; Mork 1867, 143, Mork 1928-32, 316, Andersson and Gade 2000, 298, 485 (Mberf); F 1871, 269 (Mberf).
Context: In both mss, the helmingr is recorded directly after st. 2/1-4 above, linked by Oc eɴ ‘and again’.
Notes: [All]: Because of the pres. tense of the verbs, Fidjestøl (1982, 150, 173) suggests that this helmingr could have been the refrain (stef) of the drápa. If that were the case, which seems likely, it would have concluded the section of the poem dealing with Magnús’s domestic affairs. Skj and Skald place the helmingr before st. 3 above. — [1] víkinga ‘the vikings’: For this term, see Note to Hskv Útdr 1/1, 4.
