‘Hræzkat vǫrðr, þótt verðir,
— vest traustr ok ger hraustla —
fremðar lystr, í freistni,
fránskíðs, af mér, Vánar.
Þinn mun huggun hreinni,
hers skins, trega minka,
enn skalt, ôrr, til þinnar
ástskýrðr koma dýrðar.’

‘Hræzkat, {fremðar lystr vǫrðr {fránskíðs Vánar}}, þótt verðir í freistni af mér; vest traustr ok ger hraustla. Hreinni huggun mun minka trega þinn; {ôrr {skins hers}}, enn skalt koma, ástskýrðr, til dýrðar þinnar.’

‘Do not fear, {glory-desiring keeper {of the shining ski of Vôn <river>}} [SHIP > SEAFARER], even though you come into trial through me; be confident and act bravely. With pure consolation I will lessen your sorrow; {messenger {of the shine of war}} [SWORD > WARRIOR], yet you shall come, purified by love, to your glory.’

Editions: Skj AI, 609, Skj BI, 609, Skald I, 296, NN §2131; Sveinbjörn Egilsson 1833, 14, 43, Finnur Jónsson 1887, 232, Jón Helgason 1932-3, 152-3, Louis-Jensen 1998, 97.

Notes: [2] vest ‘be’: Finnur Jónsson (1887) read vist, but noted the i as indistinct; cf. Jón Helgason 1932-3. An extrametrical pronoun, þú, following this verb is noted as indistinct by Finnur Jónsson (1887 and Skj A) and as illegible by Jón Helgason 1932-3. — [4] -skíðs ... Vánar ‘-ski ... of Vôn’: Emendations proposed by Finnur Jónsson (1887). — [5-6] hreinni huggun mun minka trega þinn ‘with pure consolation [I] will lessen your sorrow’: Skj B translates en renere trøst vil forminske din sorg ‘a purer consolation will lessen your sorrow’, but hreinni is dat. The above reading follows NN §2131, which has hreinni as instrumental dat. and reads mun as representing munk. Huggan ‘consolation, comfort’ is an important concept in Pl, and recurs in sts 31/5, 36/6 and 54/7. The only other occurrence of the word in skaldic verse is Gamlkan Jóndr 2/3.
