Jón Helgason (1932-3) suggested several possibilities for filling this l., including hǫlðar fróðir ‘the wise men’ and harða fróðir ‘the very wise ones’ but recommended hljóðlundaðir ‘the quiet-minded ones’; Kock (NN §2556) suggested hróðrglýjaðir ‘the fame-glad ones’.
